NEW LOOT – New Nintendo 3DS XL

Today was the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS XL, yet another upgrade in Nintendo’s 3DS family. In some bizarre way, I hadn’t yet bought my own 3DS, so today I went out and picked up a New 3DS XL. Seeing as I live in the US, I had to settle for the XL, otherwise I’d have most likely bought a regular sized New 3DS. The only color the store had in stock was a red one, so I snagged it since I previously had a black Nintendo DS Lite, and wanted to change up the surface color.

So far, I’m happy with my purchase! The system has a lot of great games that I’m eager to download and play. For this system I plan to download most of my titles, so as not to worry about switching cartridges while I’m out using it. I’ve never gone fully digital before, so this is a bit of a step in the future for me. Unless I find a killer deal for a hard copy of a 3DS game that I can’t pass up, I’ll stick mostly to Nintendo eShop purchases for this machine. Moving on!

I’ve owned a PSVita for the past couple of years, so I’m a bit spoiled by the OLED display on that system. The 3DS XL has a nice display, and I’m enjoying the improved 3D effects over previous 3DS models. I was never able to find the “sweet spot” for 3D visuals in past systems while playing my friend’s 3DS, so seeing that Nintendo has improved the 3D capability for this new system has me pleased. I still can’t play with 3D on for longer than 20ish minutes, otherwise my eyes will hurt. Still, it’s a nice improvement.

The system feels solid, built with a solid cover. Downloads are rather quick, in my experience so far, and updates have installed very swiftly.

I’ve only picked up Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, but I downloaded Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and received Super Mario Land from Club Nintendo some time back. Super Mario Land was one of my favorite Gameboy games back in the day, so it feels great to be revisiting a classic!

I’ll have to spend more time with the system, but so far I’m pleased with it. I wish I could download applications while browsing among other apps, and I also wish the battery life was stronger (seriously, I’ve had to recharge this thing three times today) but I’m looking forward to seeing where the system heads next. Plus, I’ve got a decent backlog ahead of me.

How are you enjoying your 3DS, new or old? Any favorite games?

THOUGHTS ON: Persona 5 First Gameplay Trailer!

After a long wait, it’s finally here! Our first glimpse at what Persona 5 will bring to the table in the long-running series of JRPG games. If you’re interested in seeing the trailer but haven’t yet caught a glimpse, check it out here.

Confession: I’ve watched this video about six or seven times now, just taking in the awesome music and beautiful visuals. The stylized menus, vast environments, and attention to detail has me looking so forward to more news regarding this game.

Some immediately notable things that made me go “YES”:

  • Within dungeons, enemies are no longer the same “shadow” form before you head into battle; each of them looks unique so you know what enemy you will be facing before-hand
  • Civilians and other characters walk around the environment (no more people just standing still everywhere!)
  • The classroom appears much more dynamic this time around, showing a closer camera shot than what was previously used in Persona 4.

There’s a lot more to gain from this trailer, but these are just a few of the things I thought stuck out to me. I love the whole heist theme going on, and I have a feeling we’ll see plenty more of it as the game draws closer.

Also: The new cat ally looks freakin’ awesome. In fact, the entire starting crew looks to have some great personalities. I can’t wait to hear more from this already promising game.

Question Time! Who’s Your Favorite Superhero?

A little while ago, I realized I haven’t posted anything here in a while. This is most likely due to my often-recurring procrastination habits.. For instance, instead of writing this, I really should be finishing up some work I have left to finish before tomorrow.

It’s time to talk about super heroes!

My favorite hero is Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man. Ever since I saw the first Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man film, I’ve been a huge fan of the web-slinger. His powers, witty nature, goofy one-liners, and badass costume have made me a fan. Even through his rough times, particularly the Spider-Man 3 film, I’ve enjoyed seeing Spidey both on the big screen and in comic books. This is why I really hope Sony and Marvel Studios are able to reach some sort of arrangement to have Spider-Man appear in an Avengers film. Seeing Spider-Man fight alongside The Avengers on the big screen sounds like a dream come true! I sometimes go back to fight scenes from previous Spider-Man films, just to see how they play out once more. In some ways, I’ve even enjoyed the new Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield. Maybe I’m a bit biased by being such a huge fan of the web-crawler, but I feel like the new films get way too much flak.

Thinking about it now, I may watch the original Spider-Man 2 this weekend…

Speaking of Spider-Man 2. Man, the video game for that movie was awesome. I know it’s been repeated many times before, but man.. THAT WEB-SWINGING. YOOOO

The web-swinging in the Spider-Man 2 video game is superb. It really made the player feel in control of their air-movement, able to precisely calculate where and when to land or shoot another shot of web. The adrenaline rush of watching Spidey fling through the air at high speeds is one that I greatly miss.

Anyway, your turn. Who’s your favorite superhero?
